Current Events/Plans for EC CPW '09
Pre-Frosh Oriented
1.Bumper Trikes
1.Time: Thursday (4/16/09) 9:30 pm -12:00 am 2.Location: Johnson 3.Overview: Tricycles converted into bumper cars 4.Coordinator: TBA. Currently CPWcomm 5.Estimated cost: 1.4 radio flyer trikes: ~$265 2.Pool noodle bumpers (20 noodles): ~$50 3.Mounting hardware: ~$30 4.Total cost: ~$345
2.New and improved tour guide cage/lounge
1.Time: all weekend (4/16-18/09) 2.Location: EC courtyard 3.Overview: 1.Revamp tour guide cage to have an adjacent lounge (~ 10' x 15' x 8') 2.Pre-frosh hang out and talk to upperclassman before or after dorm tour 3.Shaded from sun/rain by a tarp or equivalent roof 4.Couches from Talbot or equivalent seating 5.EC speakers nearby (pointed away, providing loud music for everywhere except the lounge) 6.Various light-shows (i.e. Iron Curtain, other 4E lighting) 7.Home made bubble machine 8.Fog machines 9.Possibly incorporate into nighttime dance party 4.Coordinator: TBA. 3.Shopping cart jousting
1.Time: Saturday afternoon (4/18/09) 2.Location: Near the Great Sail 3.Overview: 1.Borrowed shopping carts from (insert super market name here) 2.Left over pool noodles from bumper trikes 3.Pre-frosh battle it out (safely) in shopping carts 4.Coordinator: TBA. Currently CPWcomm 5.Estimated cost: $0
4.Massive Twister
1.Time: Thursday (4/16/09) 9:30 pm – 12:00 am 2.Location: Johnson 3.Overview: Large home made twister mat 4.Coordinator: TBA. Currently CPWcomm 5.Estimated cost: ~$20
5.Miss ugly
1.Time: TBA 2.Location: Talbot Lounge 3.Overview: Comical “Beauty” pageant for everyone's entertainment 4.Coordinator: Sarah Dee w/ Bo Han 5.Estimated cost: $75 (for Garment district clothing)
6.East side water war
1.Time: TBA 2.Location: TBA (presumably EC courtyard) 3.Overview: East Campus and Senior Haus go head to head with water balloons 4.Coordinator: Bo Han 5.Estimated cost: $20
7.EE seminar
1.Time: TBA 2.Location: Talbot Lounge 3.Overview: Pre-frosh get to make their own basic circuit based on guidance from students 4.Coordinator: TBA 5.Budget: $100
8.Chemistry seminar
1.Time: TBA 2.Location: Talbot Lounge 3.Overview: Pre-frosh get to experience home-brewed (safe) chemistry. This includes super-saturated sodium acetate solution, etc. 4.Coordinator: Charles Wu 5.Estimated cost: ~$150
9.Art seminar
1.Time: TBA 2.Location: Talbot Lounge 3.Overview: For those pre-frosh who feel like exploring the non-scientific side of MIT. Basic “make your own art” session. 4.Coordinator: Audrey Horst 5.Budget: $75
10.CryoFAC
1.Time: Friday (4/17/09) 2.Location: Talbot Lounge 3.Overview: Frozen treats made with liquid nitrogen, including LN2 ice cream. 4.Coordinator: Harrison 5.Estimated Cost: 1.20 gallons heavy cream: $300 2.20 gallons whole milk: $60 3.6 cubes of eggs (~540): $55 4.100 lbs. of sugar: $75 5.Various flavorings (frozen strawberries, mangoes, almonds, apples, cookie dough, etc.): $290 6.4 dewars of LN2: $220 7.Total cost: $1000

Parent Oriented Plans
1.Parent EC tours
1.Time: Thursday 4/16/09 4 pm – 7 pm 2.Location: East Campus 3.Overview: 1.Parents get a tour of a few halls in EC 2.Try to keep parent and student tours separate 4.Coordinator: CPWcomm 5.Estimated cost: $0
2.Parent Introduction to food @ East Campus (an alternative to dining halls)
1.Time: TBA (likely Thursday afternoon) 2.Location: Talbot Lounge, one EC kitchen, return to Talbot Lounge 3.Overview: 1.Review of general food related items in Talbot 1.Hall feeds 2.FACs 3.Examples of community building based on kitchens (hall thanksgiving, cooking with friends, etc) 4.Mention proximity to Kendall, Central, and T-stop 5.Mostly allow parents to gather 2.Take parents to see a clean EC kitchen 3.Return to Talbot to enjoy student cooked food. 4.Coordinator: TBA. 1.Giant bean bag chair
1.Pros: 1.Ideal location for pre-frosh to socialize 2.Great item for tour guide cage/lounge 2.Cons: 1.Packing peanuts and foam beads are expensive in large volumes 2.Could be messy 3.Interested in finding cheap alternative 3.Extra info: 1.If someone is willing to take charge of this, then we will apply for funding for it. 2.If you take charge, you CANNOT leave a mess behind 4.Estimated cost: ~$200
2.Dance floor stage
1.Overview: 1.Tetazoo will allegedly be constructing a dance floor in the courtyard 2.Free for use by pre-frosh (?) 2.Estimated cost: Not funded by CPW (?) 3.SOMEONE SHOULD EXPLAIN THIS
3.Swinging 'viking ship' ride
1.Overview: Small scale swinging ride 2.Pros: 1.Gets people excited about MIT 2.Creates good social interaction 3.Cons: 1.Safety? 2.Feasibility? 3.Would require decent amount of commitment from an individual or group 4.Estimated cost: ~$500
4.Swings/tire swing
1.Pros: 1.Alternative to the viking ship 2.One more thing to draw interest 2.Cons: 1.Possibly encroaching on Senior Haus's tire swing 2.May not be a big hit 3.If someone is willing to take responsibility for this, we will see that you get funding 4.Estimated Cost: ~$100
5.Putz war cart
1.Used as an awesome showcase of “MIT student creativity”.. or something 2.What's the current condition? 3.What needs to be done?
6.Meat market
1.Overview: Fundraiser for Steer Roast 2.Still happening, as far as we know 3.Does CPWcomm need to help coordinate this? 4.Someone needs to take responsibility for organizing this
7.Ice Cream Cart
1.Overview: 1.Shopping cart 2.Goes to west campus and gives out free ice cream to pre-frosh 3.Possibly plays ice cream truck music 2.Is this worth doing? 3.Estimated cost: ~$150 for ice cream
8.Wacky races
1.Overview: 1.Use a few old/broken bikes 2.Make them into something ridiculous (i.e. bicycle/shopping cart hybrid) 3.Pre-frosh race them 2.Pros: 1.Unique event that will attract lots of pre-frosh 2.displays “MIT student ingenuity” 3.Cons: 1.Will require large time and money investment 4.Estimated cost: ~$500
9.Dinosaur on wheels
1.Overview: 1.Put Talbot Dinosaur on casters 2.Bring it to Johnson for CPW Festival 3.Maybe outfit it with crazy lights and/or fog machines. 2.Pros: 1.It's a massive dinosaur in a crowded place 2.It's a massive dinosaur on wheels in a crowded place 3.We'll actually put it to use 3.Cons: 1.Can we get it out the door? 4.Estimated cost: ~$80
