Responsibilities

As JockComm, you are responsible for attending the four yearly IM meetings. There are two per semester. One is the general body meeting and the other is the affiliation meeting. If you cannot make it to a meeting, send a proxy. Otherwise, EC gets fined. Do Not Get EC Fined. If there are any fines to deal with, the payment should be paid in cash to Bernice Ward on the second floor of the Z-center. Bernice is also one of the admins who moderates the mailing list you need to be on (im-athchairs). Tell her you are EC's newest athletic chair and who the old one was so that she'll update the list and you get the information.

Jockcomm emails out to the dorm once per intramural season to state that a specific season with its corresponding sports is going to start. Because the IM program is using athleague.com[1], you must create the teams there and people join the teams. Each affiliated group may only have a maximum of one team per league per sport. I (ptieu) usually gauge student interest by having them reply to me with what sport(s) he/she is willing to play, if willing to be the captain, and time restrictions before creating teams because there is a minimum number of people needed for each team. Once the teams are created and enough people join, each team with enough people needs to join a league within a sport. As Jockcomm, you must be on each team you created for administration purposes but you do not need to play. The name of each team must contain the affiliated group's name. You can resurrect old teams and use the name rather than creating a new name.

Once the season starts, you should occasionally check to make sure things are going well but it is the captains' responsibility to deal with rescheduling of games and getting sufficient people to show up. If we forfeit a game, then EC gets fined. Do Not Get EC Fined. The duties of Jockcomm and the captains can be found on the MIT Intramural website[2].

Sports Offered

Fall, September-November

  • Badminton - requires at least seven people on a team to join a league. EC usually has enough interest for at least one team. Teams must provide their own rackets and shuttles. All scheduled games are in Rockwell cage after 7pm M-F. EC can usually qualify for B league. Games are scheduled for about an hour.
  • Bowling - requires a $200 fee. EC does not usually pay for this so anybody who is interested will have to split the cost. The location is off-campus.
  • Dodgeball - requires at least seven (or eight?) people on a team to join a league. EC sometimes has enough interest to field one team. Games are played in the Mac Court on the third floor of the Z-center. Balls are provided. EC should be in C league. Games are scheduled for half an hour.
  • Flag football - requires at least ten people on a team to join a league. EC rarely has enough interest as interest is usually from 5th west. Games are played on Briggs Field.
  • Soccer - requires at least eight(?) people on a team to join a league. EC will almost always have enough interest for one team. Games are played on the weekends on Briggs Field dependent on weather. EC should be in C league.
  • Team tennis - requires at least five(?) people on a team to join a league. EC has never had enough interest.

Winter, November-March

  • Basketball - requires at least seven people on a team to join a league. There are leagues for during IAP only and leagues that do not include IAP. EC rarely has enough interest to field a team.
  • Ice hockey - requires a fee of either $200/team (winter) or $100/team (IAP only). Players must provide their own sticks and skates. Due to this heavy cost, EC has never had enough interest.
  • Pistol - requires a $30/team fee for entrance and ammunition. Requires at least three people to join a league. EC does not pay the fee so interested persons must split the cost. EC has never had enough interest.

Spring, March-May

  • Billiards - EC never has enough interest.
  • Bowling - see Fall sports
  • Foosball - EC has never had sufficient interest.
  • Octathon - EC has never had sufficient interest.
